Jay gets a lot of fanmail every month. People say things like, “The Plug changed my life!” These people are mostly being nice, but I can honestly say that The Plug changed my life in a very tangible way. I met Jay through our mutual friend Jenn in October of 2002. At the time I was in a relationship that was teetering on the brink of implosion. When the actual implosion happened two months later, I hinted to Jenn that I might be interested in Jay when I was ready to date again. Jenn passed the word along, and I think Jay took that to mean, “Ask the bitch out now, fool!” Jay asked me out twice and each time I explained that I was not ready for more commitment. I think Jay took that to mean, “Quit talking to me, I would never go out with you.”

After all of this initial miscommunication, I finally visited The Plug website. It was March of 2003 now, and one of the first articles I read was Mystery Can. Like many readers, I couldn’t get enough. I read all of the archives in one sitting (which didn’t take very long at the time). My Desperate Pen Pal Experimentt gave me an idea. On March 3, 2003, I penned a letter to Jay. The first page was typical fanmail fare, but pages two and three delved into more serious issues like “I like you. Do you still like me?” I mailed the letter and held my breath until I got a reply two days later. My life has never been the same since.
